Otter or Koine Live Pro for the lecture you are sitting in?
Otter is a meeting notetaker: it joins your Zoom, Teams and Meet calls, transcribes in six languages, and gives you 300 free minutes a month with summaries and search. Koine Live Pro is for the talk you are attending in a language that is not yours: it translates into your language as the speaker talks, in up to 70 languages, keeps the transcript in a private history and lets you ask questions about it. If your problem is remembering meetings held in English, Otter is cheaper and better connected. If your problem is following a lecture in a language you are still learning, translation as it happens is the job, and Otter's own material describes translation only as something you ask for afterwards.

When Otter is the better choice
If most of what you want to remember happens on video calls, in English or one of Otter's other five languages, Otter is built for you and Koine is not. Its bot joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet on its own, on the free plan, and writes the notes while you talk. The free tier is generous for occasional use, and the paid plans are cheaper than Koine Live Pro for someone who transcribes a lot in one language.
It also goes further after the meeting than a lecture tool needs to: action items, summaries emailed to attendees, and thirty-six integrations that push the notes into Slack, Notion, a CRM or a task board. A searchable archive with an AI chat across every meeting you ever recorded is a real advantage for a working life lived in meetings. And it records offline, uploading later, which Koine does not.
When Koine Live Pro is
Koine Live Pro exists for one situation: you are in the room, the person at the front is speaking a language you are still building, and you want to follow now rather than read a transcript tonight. The translation arrives in your language while the sentence is still being finished. You can leave it in the original to practise and switch to your language when you lose the thread, highlight a line as it passes, and ask afterwards what the lecturer actually said about something.
Three smaller differences follow from that. Recording is a separate switch that is off by default, so a session can keep the words and no audio, which matters in a classroom or a church. The relay and the account live in the EU.
Otter's own material describes translation as something you do to a transcript afterwards, through Otter Chat, with no published count of languages. For a working meeting that is fine. For a ninety-minute lecture in Norwegian, it is a different product.
What the table cannot show
Both run in the cloud, and both are machine transcription, which is wrong sometimes. Otter publishes no accuracy percentage and we publish none either; the number people quote for Otter comes from a user's tweet embedded on Otter's blog, not from Otter. The right test is ten minutes of your own lecturer, not anyone's marketing.
Both put the consent question on you. Otter's terms say you confirm you will comply with recording laws and get permission where required; Koine's personal page says the same in plainer words: tell people first. Neither is a substitute for a qualified interpreter or a professional transcript where the stakes are legal or medical.
Otter's data handling deserves a careful read: audio and transcripts are stored in the United States, Otter trains its own models on de-identified recordings and transcripts unless you are an Enterprise customer who opts out, and a custom retention period is an Enterprise feature arranged through an account manager. None of that is hidden; it is on the privacy policy, and whether it matters depends on what you record.

Does Otter translate a lecture live?
Otter's help centre describes translation as an action on a finished conversation: you ask Otter Chat to translate the transcript into another language. Transcription itself runs in six languages, one per recording. Live translation as the speaker talks is not something Otter describes, and it is what Koine Live Pro is for.
Can Koine Live Pro join my Zoom or Teams meetings?
No. It listens through your phone's microphone in the room you are in, or transcribes a podcast episode from a link. It does not join video calls as a bot; Otter does, on every plan.
How many hours do I get with Koine Live Pro?
Four language-hours a month, plus hour packs that never expire. A plain transcript uses a third of an hour per hour, so the allowance covers about twelve hours of transcription a month, or four hours translated into one language.
Where is my audio processed?
Otter is cloud-based with storage at Amazon Web Services in the United States, transferred under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Koine relays live audio through servers in Amsterdam and stores accounts in Stockholm; OpenAI's speech and translation runs outside the EU today, with EU processing scheduled.
Does either one work offline?
Otter records locally when offline and transcribes when the connection returns. Koine Live Pro needs a connection while it runs, because the translation happens on its servers as you listen.
Is either one free?
Otter's Basic plan is free with 300 minutes a month. Koine Live Pro has no free tier; joining someone else's Koine session is free and needs no account, and Koine Plus, for people who mostly attend other people's sessions, is USD 6.99 a month.
